Hirschfeld: A Legend in Line

The Studio of Ben Solowey is delighted to announce its latest exhibition of drawings and prints by the legendary Al Hirschfeld. The new exhibition at the Solowey Studio will include some of Hirschfeld’s most iconic works from the worlds of stage, screen and concert hall. “Over 82 years, Al Hirschfeld both recorded and defined so much of popular culture, especially through his drawings of productions on Broadway and in Hollywood. He was there at the birth of television and captured its first half-century. He recorded more popular music than any MP3, CD, LP, or wax cylinder ever did. He really was the Line King,” says David Leopold, Director of the Solowey Studio. This new exhibition, HIRSCHFELD: A Legend in Line will open to the public on Saturday, October 11th at the Solowey Studio in Ottsville, PA with a reception from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and remain open on Sunday at the same hours. The exhibit will continue Wednesdays through Sundays, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., through October 26th.

The exhibition also celebrates the publication of Leopold’s Hirschfeld’s Sondheim, a deluxe oversized 11 x 14-inch book, with an introduction by Bernadette Peters, and a foreword by Ben Brantley. It contains more than 50 drawings of Sondheim and his musicals, plays and films, including 25 full page images that can be easily removed and put right on a wall. On the reverse side—rare, ancillary images from the Hirschfeld archives that are accompanied by revealing text by Leopold on how the shows and the drawings reflect the development of both artists. “This keepsake treasure book is graced with 50 remarkable drawings spanning Steve’s most acclaimed works,” writes Peters in her Introduction. “I can hardly think of a better way to memorialize Steve and his art other than actually watching his shows or listening to his songs. Al in a single image captures a memorable emotion indelibly etching our hearts and memories with Steve’s artistic contributions.” Signed copies will be available for sale.
